Chapter Fourteen

Daniel looked at Special Agent Martin Richards and tried not to roll his eyes. Martin was enjoying every second. Not that Daniel begrudged the guy. He’d been instrumental in saving Mac’s life not so many weeks ago, and despite the fact that Riley could have healed Martin, he already had FBI witnesses to the injury. He’d chosen to keep the shot-out knee and stay in the FBI teaching the recruits who might be good at their jobs but struggled with the standard qualifications.

Before his eventual suicide, Martin’s younger brother had been an undiagnosed dyslexic and bullied for years. This was Martin’s way of trying to honor his brother.

Besides, Beth and the rest of the kids adored him. Martin didn’t work in the field anymore, but he was a good sounding board for Daniel.

“So, let me get this straight.” Martin paused, probably for dramatic effect.

“I can take your sticks away,” Daniel grumbled.

Martin twinkled. “And I can unleash Beth on you.”

Daniel chuckled. “Okay, you win.”

“You have two mates who are both pregnant, a psycho father-in-law who’s threatening to turn humans into wolf shifters and make his own army, and a brother and two half-sisters you didn’t know about and are now responsible for?”

Daniel waved his outstretched hand like maybe. Then he sighed. “No, that’s just about right.”

“Then what the fuck are you doing here?” Martin asked in complete and genuine astonishment.

Daniel met Martin’s gaze. Guilt suffused him and weighed him down. He didn’t know. He didn’t actually have to be in the office. They couldn’t do anything about any supposed werewolf army with zero proof and while they’d reached out to some contacts, they were having to be really careful. He’d shared what Luke had told him with the rest of the adults, who were just as skeptical as Daniel, but they were all speaking to their contacts. Christian was now in a different pack and out of Luke’s old alpha’s clutches.

Because of what Daniel did concerning the secret FBI shifter unit, the leeway he got at work was tremendous. He was also in between large cases. He doubted if he decided to go on vacation for three months that anyone would question why he wasn’t actually at work. “I don’t know,” he admitted.

Martin’s expression softened. “Wanna do a swap?”

Daniel’s heart hurt at the completely raw question. He knew Martin had no family. Knew he was lonely. Even though everyone included him where they could, it wasn’t the same. Daniel knew it wasn’t the same.

“Hiding?” Daniel admitted. “My mates are so young, and...” he sighed. “No, that’s not even it. I just feel like I trapped them.”

Martin tilted his head in consideration. “This is the true mates thing?”

Daniel nodded.

“So you’d die to stop them from being hurt? Crazily protective? But worried they might not want to be tied down to an old man?” His eyes twinkled again.

“Lay off the old,” Daniel objected half-heartedly.

“Has it occurred to you that because of your age and experience, you’re in a place to be a better mate than you think?”

Daniel focused on Martin.
